Key Takeaways

  • Wells Fargo will launch tokenized USD-to-pound deposits this fall, with a broader rollout in 2027.
  • Wells Fargo’s 24/7 settlement plan could pressure banks to modernize cross-border payments.
  • Cosmos-backed rails face a 2027 test: prove private blockchains beat standard databases.

Cosmos Labs Backs Wells Fargo’s 24/7 Blockchain Payment Push

Wells Fargo is preparing to move commercial bank deposits onto blockchain rails, offering corporate clients round-the-clock settlement without leaving the regulated banking system.

The service will begin this fall with a limited U.S. dollar-to-pound corridor. A broader rollout covering more clients, countries and currencies is planned for 2027.

“Tokenized deposits will enable Wells Fargo’s corporate and commercial clients to move money between accounts and across borders with greater ease and increased speed,” Chief Financial Officer Mike Santomassimo said in the official statement.

The bank will integrate the service into its existing payments platform. Eligible transactions will automatically use tokenized deposits when they can improve speed, timing or flexibility.

Supporters See a Milestone for Onchain Banking

Wells Fargo said the system will support transfers at any hour, including weekends and holidays. It also plans to add programmable payments that release funds once predefined conditions are met.

The deposits will remain bank liabilities and retain the regulatory protections and deposit-insurance eligibility attached to Wells Fargo’s conventional products.

Magmar, co-CEO of Cosmos Labs, said Wells Fargo’s blockchain is built using Cosmos technology. He described the launch as a validation of the network’s “interoperability, programmability, and reliability.”

Vladimir Tikhomirov, co-founder of Algebra, said the dollar-pound launch showed blockchain moving into regulated foreign exchange and cross-border settlement. He said:

“If this adoption curve continues, it’s reasonable to expect that within the next few years tokenized real-world assets will become part of everyday financial activity.” However, he warned that interoperability could become a major challenge if banks develop isolated networks that fragment liquidity.

Critics Question the Need for Private Ledgers

Omid Malekan, an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School, offered a sharper critique. He argued that banks already provide real-time internal payments using modern databases, without deploying permissioned blockchains.

“Banks don’t need blockchain to do better banking, at all,” Malekan wrote.

In his view, private networks remove the characteristics that make public blockchains useful, including open validation, censorship resistance and settlement guarantees. Banks would still need to reverse errors, block illicit transactions and comply with regulatory orders.

Malekan also warned that private blockchain systems may introduce operational risks without delivering the benefits of public networks.

Wells Fargo’s rollout will therefore test more than payment speed. It will show whether bank-controlled blockchains can justify their complexity, or whether tokenized deposits become a new interface built on familiar financial infrastructure.
