NVIDIA outlines AI-agent workflow for rewriting Spark UDFs for GPUs

NVIDIA said AI agents can help rewrite Apache Spark user-defined functions into GPU-accelerated code, a workflow the company says can remove fallback overhead in Spark jobs and, in one reported production case, deliver a 22x speedup.

Evidence and context

In a blog post published on 2026-10-13, NVIDIA described how its cuDF plugin for Apache Spark can accelerate analytics workloads by keeping execution on GPUs instead of falling back to CPU processing when Spark encounters UDFs. The company said UDFs are a persistent bottleneck because they introduce opaque custom logic that Spark’s declarative engine cannot parallelize in the same way as built-in SQL and DataFrame expressions.

NVIDIA said that many UDFs can be rewritten in one of three ways: as Spark SQL expressions for simple logic; as cuDF-based implementations through the RapidsUDF interface for more complex columnar processing; or, for the most complex cases, with custom CUDA kernels invoked through JNI. The company framed these as a complexity ladder, with SQL offering the lowest overhead and CUDA the most control.

The post used a Celsius-to-Fahrenheit transformation as an example, first showing a Scala UDF and then a direct SQL rewrite that the cuDF plugin could accelerate transparently. It also showed a RapidsUDF implementation using cuDF ColumnVector and Scalar operations to process data in parallel on the GPU.

NVIDIA said the rewrite workflow is designed to be assisted by coding agents through four skills: scaffolding and design, testing, conversion, benchmarking and optimization. According to the post, these skills supply project templates, verification routines and build configuration so that the agent can focus on the UDF itself while tests and benchmarks determine whether the rewrite is correct and performant.

For evidence of impact, NVIDIA said a major consumer technology company used the workflow to convert more than 30 UDFs in production pipelines. In one benchmark cited by the company, operator time fell from 274.55 hours to 12.78 hours across a 600-billion-row workload, which NVIDIA described as a 22x speedup. The post also said the UDF in question affected more than 3,000 jobs.

The company’s claims should be read in the context of recent Apache Spark releases. Apache Spark 4.2.0, released on 2026-07-14, uses Arrow serialization by default for Python UDFs, while Spark 4.1.3 and 3.5.9 were released on 2026-07-15 and 2026-07-16, respectively, according to Apache Spark’s official news pages. Those releases are separate from NVIDIA’s post and do not verify the reported GPU benchmark.

NVIDIA said the cuDF skills for Apache Spark are available on GitHub, and pointed readers to the company’s documentation and a Data + AI Summit session for further technical detail. The post did not provide an independent audit of the performance results.
