Metaplanet and Wintermute BTC Moves Trigger Market Sell Fear

From the data presented by Lookonchain, it appears that Metaplanet, the Tokyo listed Bitcoin treasury company, has moved 2,400 BTC to Coinbase Prime and Wintermute has shifted 5,100 BTC to Binance. Both these transactions have aroused fears of selling in the cryptocurrency world.

Metaplanet Sends More BTC to Coinbase Prime

On August 31, 2026, Metaplanet transferred another 2,400 BTC, which were worth $186 million at the time, into Coinbase Prime. This move came after the company transferred 1,000 BTC on August 25 and 1,350 BTC on August 28. This move by the company has caught the attention of the traders because funds moving from a corporate wallet to an exchange-linked platform can sometimes precede a sale.

Lookonchain describes Metaplantet as a Bitcoin miner, which is rather a treasury company and not a mining operation.

However, one should keep in mind that Coinbase Prime is just not a trading venue because the platform provides services such as institutional custody, financing and execution services, meaning a deposit alone does not prove that Bitcoin has been sold.

Metaplanet’s reported Bitcoin holdings remain around 43,000 BTC, accumulated at an average price of roughly $96,191, which is well above Bitcoin’s current price. Arkham data reportedly shows roughly 38,650 BTC currently held which is a gap the company is yet to address. With this number, the company has become one of Asia’s most closely watched corporate Bitcoin holders, so even a routine wallet move can quickly turn into market gossip.

However, in the past weeks, a similar situation was observed on August 12, where Metaplanet’s CEO Simon Gerovich posted on X and pushed back against the narrative. In the post he stated that the company had shifted 5,014 BTC between custody addresses without selling any coins. He described the movements as operational and custody-related rather than a change in the firm’s long-term Bitcoin strategy.

In the similar manner, for the recent transfer, there has been no public confirmation from either Metaplanet or Coinbase regarding the liquidation of the said number of BTC. Metaplanet is also proposing to contribute 2,100 BTC and $2.5 million in cash to Superplanet, a planned US-listed treasury vehicle with Super League Enterprises, subject to a shareholder vote in the fourth quarter. That would account for roughly 4.9% of its holdings.

Wintermute Adds to Exchange-Flow Jitters

According to Onchain Lens data, wallets that are linked to market maker Wintermute transferred approximately 5,100 BTC (worth $399 million) to Binance over the past two days. These transfers have been split into several transactions rather than sent as one giant Bitcoin cannonball.

For traders, Binance-bound Bitcoin can look like a possible sell-side signal because exchanges are where spot sales can take place. Yet the same warning applies here as Wintermute is a market maker, and market makers regularly shift crypto across exchanges to provide liquidity, settle trades, hedge positions, or rebalance inventory. This makes the transfer important but not conclusive.

A market maker sending Bitcoin to Binance is different from a long-term corporate treasury company that announces that it has sold part of its reserve. Wintermute’s business involves moving assets where trading demand is strongest. Without a public statement or follow-up on-chain activity showing actual sales, calling the transfer a dump would not be a wise decision.

Bitcoin’s Volatile Backdrop

These wallet movements arrived during a choppy stretch for Bitcoin. BTC price dropped from around $79,000 to below $77,000 before rebounding near $77,700, while leveraged long traders were hit by roughly $396 million in liquidations, based on the figures circulating in market reports.

This sort of move tends to amplify every whale alert. When Bitcoin is calm, a large transfer may barely make noise. When liquidations are rising and key weekly or monthly closes are approaching, traders suddenly start treating every exchange deposit like a clue in a crypto detective show.

Saylor’s Buying Signal Meets Market Caution

The transfer also comes as Bitcoin treasury watchers focus on Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy. Michael Saylor recently returned to social media with the phrase, “We’re ₿ack,” after a period without a disclosed Bitcoin purchase.

Strategy still holds about 840,447 BTC, according to the recent report from Bitcoin Treasuries, while the firm has been building liquidity and maintaining access to capital markets. Its Bitcoin position and financing strategy remain a major reference point for corporate-Bitcoin investors.

The situation ends up with two different signals. The group of Saylor is part of the familiar corporate accumulation story. On the other hand, Metaplanet and Wintermute’s transactions have brought uncertainty regarding the flow of transactions.

For the time being, it cannot be proved that Metaplanet has sold Bitcoins. The previous explanation by Gerovich denies the above-mentioned claim. The large amount of transactions made by Wintermute at Binance deserves special attention, but market making is not a bearish position.
