IRS Warns of Data-Stealing Crypto Scam Letters

A crypto scam using counterfeit IRS letters is targeting digital asset holders in an attempt to steal their assets and personal data, the Internal Revenue Service warned on July 30, 2026, according to Bloomberg.

The fake notices direct recipients to register for the “Digital Asset Compliance Portal,” a program the agency says it has never operated. The warning marks a shift toward physical mail in a scam landscape that has mostly relied on phishing emails and fake websites.

The Fake “Digital Asset Compliance Portal” Letters

Bloomberg reported that the counterfeit letters mimic official IRS correspondence and instruct recipients to scan a QR code to enroll in the “Digital Asset Compliance Portal,” the centerpiece of the crypto scam.

The IRS confirmed no such portal exists and said it does not use QR codes in its genuine notices. The agency also advised recipients to hang up immediately if a caller demands payment tied to one of the letters.

Bloomberg also reported that the warning came from the IRS’s Criminal Investigation unit, which said the QR codes route recipients to a spoofed IRS website rather than the agency’s real domain. Once on that site, victims are prompted to enter personal information, giving scammers what they need to access accounts or move crypto funds directly.

What This Scam Means for Anyone Holding Crypto

Anyone who has previously received a legitimate digital asset compliance letter from the IRS is a plausible target, since the fake version borrows the same format. The scheme adds to a broader run of crypto scam warnings that our ongoing crypto news coverage tracks, a reminder of how quickly scam tactics shift as digital asset ownership becomes more common.

How to Verify Before You Respond

The IRS’s core advice, per Bloomberg, is direct: never scan a QR code from an unsolicited letter, and never hand over payment information to a caller claiming to represent the agency as part of this crypto scam.

What This Means for You

If a letter tied to this crypto scam mentions a “Digital Asset Compliance Portal,” do not scan any QR code on it and do not call any number printed on the page. Contact the IRS directly through IRS.gov to confirm whether a notice is genuine before sharing any personal or wallet information. Legitimate IRS mail about digital assets does exist, but it will never ask you to enroll in a portal by scanning a code.
