What Broke Bitcoin’s $80K Level

November 1, 2026

Bitcoin’s celebrated “Uptober” tradition suffered another setback in 2026, with the leading crypto asset closing October down 7.32% against the greenback, its weakest performance for the month since 2014. Over the past seven days, BTC traded between $76,337 and $81,840 as the major $6.3 billion Binance hack rattled markets. The decline also marked bitcoin’s first consecutive October losses since 2011 and 2012, raising questions about November’s prospects.

Key Takeaways

  • Bitcoin’s price closed October down 7.32%, recording its weakest performance for the month since 2014.
  • Binance’s $6.3 billion breach rattled markets as BTC traded between $76,337 and $81,840.
  • Bitcoin’s price enters November facing a critical support test after consecutive October losses.

Bitcoin’s Uptober Tradition Takes a Beating as October Closes 7.32% Lower

Bitcoin’s famous “Uptober” rally never showed up for its 2026 appointment. Instead, the cryptocurrency closed October with a 7.32% decline, delivering its worst performance for the month in 12 years and fourth-worst October in recorded trading history.

The final week proved particularly punishing, with BTC changing hands between $76,337 and $81,840 as the $6.3 billion Binance hack jolted an already nervous market. The monthly result also cemented a rare historical distinction: two consecutive losing Octobers, something bitcoin’s price hadn’t experienced since 2011 and 2012.

Uptober Gets Clobbered as Bitcoin’s Seasonal Winning Streak Fades

October has historically been one of bitcoin’s friendliest months. Across the 16 completed Octobers from 2010 through 2025, 11 finished positive, producing a 69% winning record, an average return of 26.1%, and a median gain of 12.9%. The 2026 edition threw cold water on that reputation thanks to the massive Binance hack that occurred on Oct. 29.

At negative 7.32%, October ranked behind only three worse performances: 2011’s 34.7% decline, 2014’s 12.6% retreat, and 2012’s 11.1% loss. The comparison becomes even more striking against recent history. Bitcoin’s price gained 40% in October 2021, advanced 28.6% in 2023, and climbed 10.9% in 2024. Even 2018’s disappointing 4.6% loss looks relatively tame beside this year’s figures. October 2025 had already finished 3.9% lower, meaning bitcoin has now registered back-to-back October declines for the first time in 14 years.

Binance Hack Rocks Bitcoin as Weekly Trading Range Widens

The month’s closing stretch delivered a nasty surprise. Across the seven-day period, bitcoin’s price traded within a $5,503 range, reaching a high of $81,840 before sinking as low as $76,337 amid the Binance hack fallout. The difference between those extremes represented approximately 6.7% of the weekly high.

The sharpest selling followed reports of a massive Oct. 29 breach involving Binance hot wallets. The incident intensified market anxiety, while leveraged liquidations exceeded $1.5 billion during the initial 24-hour period. Binance pledged to cover customer losses using company resources and its Secure Asset Fund for Users, while blockchain investigators estimated approximately $3 billion in stolen assets had been frozen.

Those assurances did not immediately resolve questions surrounding the breach, the remaining stolen assets or the timeline for restoring withdrawals. Institutional flows offered little consolation. U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds reportedly suffered approximately $643 million in net withdrawals on Oct. 30, adding another source of selling pressure.

Bitcoin’s $76,000 Support Faces a Critical November Test

The seven-day trading range now provides a useful technical reference for the opening days of November. Bitcoin’s price reaching a $76,337 weekly low places the $76,000 to $76,500 region squarely in focus. A decisive break beneath that area could expose $75,000, followed by the $73,000 region. Conversely, reclaiming $78,000 to $80,000 would improve the near-term picture, while the $81,840 weekly high represents another potential obstacle for buyers.

The broader annual performance offers another sobering comparison. Bitcoin’s price is down approximately 11.2% year to date, following a 6.3% decline in 2025.

November’s Historical Record Offers Bitcoin Bulls a Glimmer of Hope

Despite October’s bruising performance, seasonal history hasn’t completely abandoned bitcoin. November carries a historical average return of approximately 34.9%, although that figure is heavily influenced by an extraordinary 454% advance in 2013. Its median gain of 10.3% offers a more restrained benchmark.

The coming sessions will test whether Binance’s recovery efforts, institutional fund flows and improving market confidence can interrupt the decline. Bitcoin’s October performance also presents a curious historical contradiction. September 2026 delivered a 6.4% gain during a month traditionally associated with weakness, only for October, historically a stronger period, to finish sharply lower.

The old seasonal playbook has been turned on its head. November now inherits a market where the calendar’s bullish reputation must contend with actual buyers, sellers and the aftermath of one of cryptocurrency’s largest reported security breaches.
