Ocado shares are still down 81% but one major broker says they’re heading to 460p!

Ocado (LSE:OCDO) shares just got a huge boost after JPMorgan raised its price target from 290p to 460p. That’s a 59% increase, with the bank maintaining its Overweight rating.

The shares jumped as much as 7.2% during the session and closed up 9.96% at 348.8p, reaching a 52-week high.

Should you buy Ocado Group Plc shares today?

Before you decide, please take a moment to review this report first. Despite ongoing uncertainties from US tariffs to global conflicts, Mark Rogers and his team believe many UK shares still trade at substantial discounts, offering savvy investors plenty of potential opportunities to learn about.

That’s why this could be an ideal time to secure this valuable research – Mark’s analysts have scoured the markets to reveal 5 of his favourite long-term ‘Buys’. Please, don’t make any big decisions before seeing them.

That’s a striking move. But zoom out and the picture is less flattering: Ocado is still down 82% over five years.

So is this finally the recovery investors have waited for, or another burst of optimism around a business that has repeatedly disappointed?

Why JPMorgan is bullish

JPMorgan’s case is not built on hype alone. The bank points to momentum in Ocado’s turnaround, with five customer fulfilment centres due to ramp up between 2027 and 2029. It also expects tighter cost control and projects group EBITDA compound annual growth of 21% between 2025 and 2028.

Importantly, JPMorgan has removed its previous assumption of further site closures. Its 460p target values the contracted business, assuming little or no value from incremental modules.

That matters because Ocado’s economics depend on winning technology contracts and making those automated warehouses productive. Each new partner or module can improve the long-term outlook.

Long story short: there are real catalysts here, and greater visibility has greatly improved the long-term picture.

The problem with a 460p target

An important point to remember is that the target rose 170p in one day – Ocado’s warehouses, contracts and technology didn’t.

A price target is just that – a target. It’s based on assumptions like new module signings, warehouse ramp-ups, cost savings, and rising cash flow. Plus it’s a bet on whether investors accept the valuation.

Change a few inputs and the target can move dramatically.

JPMorgan’s 460p target is the highest tracked by Bloomberg, implying roughly 36% growth from current levels (as of 21 October).

When a broker sets such a high target, it can create a self-reinforcing narrative. Investors buy the upgrade, the share price rises, and the upgrade appears validated. That works until the assumptions are tested by results.

The FOMO problem

The emotional pull is obvious. Ocado has more than doubled since hitting a 13-year low in mid-July, so anyone who avoided the shares may feel they missed the trade.

But the real question is not whether it can rise further. It’s whether today’s price already reflects a successful turnaround.

In situations like these, I stick to a simple rule: identify real evidence to support a valuation before buying based on a target alone. In practice, that means I could miss some of the early gains – but that’s how risk management works.

Shares often recover before the full evidence arrives, so the question comes down to your risk/reward tolerance. Are you prepared to dive in on hope, or take a safer, potentially less-rewarding, approach?

What to watch next

On balance, I’d say Ocado deserves consideration, but I’d keep a close eye on the following:

  • Ocado Retail’s growth and margins, including progress with Marks & Spencer.
  • Whether the 2027 to 2029 fulfilment-centre ramp-ups stay on schedule.
  • New technology contracts or additional modules from existing partners.
  • Whether underlying free cash flow breaks even in the second half of 2026.

Ocado is no longer a forgotten stock, it’s a turnaround story that’s gaining real momentum. Still, I would rather be late to a proven recovery than early to a broker’s optimism.

And for growth investors, there may be an even better opportunity we’ve identified…

What growth stock do we like better than Ocado Group Plc right now?

One of our Share Advisor analysts has just released a brand new stock report that we think is a must-read for any investor looking to try and generate potential growth.
