Benchmarking Study: Training & Communications

Watch the webinar on demand

Deciding between off-the-shelf, customized, and bespoke compliance training isn’t always straightforward. In this webinar, LRN’s Paul Howe and Alyse Phillips, Global Compliance Training Program Lead at Integra LifeSciences, share practical frameworks for evaluating content decisions based on business risk, learner needs, and desired outcomes. Watch the full discussion below, then explore the key themes and considerations highlighted in this recap.

As ethics and compliance programs continue to evolve, organizations are faced with an important question: When is off-the-shelf training enough, and when does a topic require customized or fully bespoke learning?

That was the focus of LRN’s recent webinar, Building the Right Learning Mix: When to Customize and When to Create Bespoke Content, where Paul Howe, Head of Client Success, North America, sat down with Alyse Phillips, Global Compliance Training Program Lead at Integra LifeSciences, to discuss how organizations can make more strategic learning decisions.

While the conversation centered on learning content, one message stood out from the beginning: effective ethics and compliance programs are about far more than training alone. Leadership, culture, policy management, analytics, reporting channels, supplier training, and learning all work together to shape employee behavior and strengthen organizational integrity.

Rather than advocating for one approach over another, the discussion reflected LRN’s philosophy that effective compliance programs are built on the right mix of learning experiences. That means combining scalable library content, thoughtful customization, and bespoke development where business risk demands it.

Here are several considerations discussed during the webinar that can help organizations evaluate their own learning strategy.

Start with the risk, not the content

One of the strongest themes throughout the discussion was that organizations shouldn’t begin by asking whether they can build bespoke content. Instead, they should begin by understanding the business risk they’re trying to address.

Questions such as these can help guide the decision:

  • What happens if employees get this wrong?
  • How specific is this risk to our organization?
  • What behaviors are we trying to reinforce?
  • What business outcomes are we trying to achieve?

As Howe explained, learning effectiveness should always be the primary driver, not a preference for one content format over another. Lower-risk topics may be well served by licensed content, while high-risk, organization-specific issues often justify greater customization or a fully bespoke approach.

This philosophy is reflected in LRN’s approach to learning. Rather than forcing organizations to choose between one model or another, LRN helps organizations build a portfolio of learning experiences by combining research-backed library content, customizable courses, and bespoke development where unique risks or business objectives require it.

Context is what turns information into learning

The webinar also challenged the assumption that customization simply means adding a company logo or updating branding.

Meaningful customization creates learning that feels authentic by incorporating company policies, realistic scenarios, familiar terminology, and examples employees encounter in their day-to-day work.

Phillips shared that at Integra, the decision to build bespoke learning often comes down to whether employees need to recognize company-specific products, customer interactions, or field scenarios. When learners immediately recognize themselves in the training, they’re more likely to engage with the content and apply it on the job.

For organizations evaluating their own programs, one question is worth asking:

Could this training apply to almost any company, or does it need to reflect the realities of ours?

This is where LRN’s flexible content strategy comes into play. Organizations can quickly deploy proven ethics and compliance content for common risks while tailoring branding, policies, scenarios, and examples to create learning experiences that feel specific to their culture and workforce.

Not every learning objective deserves the same investment

Another practical framework discussed during the webinar was aligning the learning experience with the level of business impact.

Awareness-level topics often benefit from the speed and scalability of licensed content. As business impact increases, organizations should consider richer instructional design, realistic scenarios, and opportunities for employees to practice decision-making before they encounter those situations in the real world.

Rather than treating every compliance topic the same, organizations should think about building a portfolio of learning experiences that reflects varying levels of risk.

This approach also enables organizations to maximize both efficiency and effectiveness, reserving bespoke development for the moments where it will have the greatest impact while leveraging library content to accelerate deployment across broader compliance topics.

AI changes how we build learning, not how we decide what learners need

Unsurprisingly, AI was another major topic during the webinar.

The panel acknowledged that AI can significantly reduce production time and accelerate content development. But they also cautioned against allowing speed or cost to become the primary decision criteria.

Organizations still need governance, subject matter expertise, legal review, instructional design, and ongoing content maintenance, particularly for high-risk regulatory topics. AI can accelerate production, but it shouldn’t replace thoughtful learning strategy.

This mirrors LRN’s perspective on AI-enabled learning. Technology should enhance instructional design, not replace it. AI is most valuable when paired with governance, content expertise, and learning science to ensure training remains accurate, engaging, and aligned to business outcomes.

Measure more than completion

Another important discussion focused on measurement.

While completion rates remain an important operational metric, they provide only one view of program effectiveness.

The webinar encouraged organizations to think more broadly about learner feedback, knowledge retention, behavioral change, culture metrics, and business outcomes. Ultimately, the goal isn’t simply to confirm employees completed a course. It’s to understand whether learning influenced how they make decisions at work.

Phillips also shared how Integra gathers feedback directly from employees before rolling out new learning experiences, using those insights to improve navigation, engagement, and instructional design. That collaborative approach helps ensure learning resonates with employees before it reaches a broader audience.

These insights reinforce another important aspect of LRN’s approach: helping organizations move beyond completion rates through analytics, learner feedback, and measurement strategies that connect learning to culture and business outcomes.

The strongest compliance programs don’t choose one approach. They build the right mix.

Perhaps the most important takeaway from the discussion is that organizations don’t need to choose between licensed content and bespoke development.

The most mature compliance programs intentionally use both.

Some topics benefit from the speed, scalability, and ongoing regulatory updates that library content provides. Others warrant thoughtful customization to reflect company policies and culture. And for high-risk, highly specific business scenarios, bespoke learning may be the most effective investment.

That’s why LRN’s ethics and compliance learning solutions are designed to support organizations across the full spectrum of learning needs. Whether the priority is rapidly deploying research-backed training, tailoring content to reflect organizational policies and branding, or developing fully bespoke learning experiences for unique risks, the objective remains the same: delivering learning that is relevant, engaging, and designed to influence behavior.

As Howe noted in closing, the best content decisions aren’t simply the ones that fit the budget. They’re the ones that align learning with business risk, organizational priorities, and the behaviors companies want employees to demonstrate every day.
